Fish Oil Lowers Cholesterol

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Although it is not necessary to understand all the specifics of the relationship between fish oil and LDL cholesterol on your health, a little basic understanding should be helpful to convince you to get regular amounts of fish oil.

Initially we need to recognize that cholesterol is typically broken down into two major categories. What is known as HDL cholesterol is generally good in that it is able to move easily to the liver to be processed out of the body. On the other hand, LDL cholesterol is considerably less dense than HDL cholesterol and will cling to the walls of the blood vessels creating plaque and narrowing. LDL cholesterol today makes up some seventy-five percent of the total cholesterol in most people which adds to plaque formation which contributes significantly to the chances of heart disease as well as.

Fish Oil or Drugs?

A major concern in the reduction of heart disease risk is reducing LDL cholesterol levels. It is usually time to look for a way to reduce the LDL cholesterol when it is above 100 mg/dl. Of course synthetic drugs, or statins, made for this purpose may accomplish this but along with these medicines come the potential for side effects that could possible not be better than not taking the drugs at all. Of course determining whether these drugs are appropriate for you should happen only with the advice of your doctor.

lower LDL cholesterol

However, these synthetic drugs have alternatives. History and testing have shown that fish oil and LDL cholesterol interact in such a way that the LDL cholesterol is facilitated in acting like HDL to move the excess cholesterol back to the liver for processing. Omega 3 fatty acids are high in fish oil. The ability of LDL cholesterol developing plaque in the blood stream is reduced by these three fatty acids, DHA, EPA and ALA, capability to bond with it. The creation of similar results as the synthetic drugs without the potentially harmful side effects is the net result of the combination of the fish oil and LDL cholesterol.

Best Source of Fish Oil

The book seems to still be open on what the best source is for the Omega 3 fatty acids. Some say that you should eat tuna, salmon or other fish high in Omega 3 at least three times a week. Some indicate that a good pill made by a responsible distributor is an effective way to go. The contoversy will more than likely continue for sometime but it is not about fish oil and LDL cholesterol but rather about how to take the fish oil.
